This week’s episode is dedicated to Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea, rum, and the destructive nature of white hegemony. Come for the island flair, stay because you’re trapped by all the symbolism and foreshadowing in this prequel to Jane Eyre.
To drink along: Dark and Stormy or an Ode to Foreshadowing
- Lime juice
- Ginger beer (5 oz)
- Myer’s Dark Rum (not the lighter rum Victoria found at the local liquor store) (2 oz)
Fill glass half-full with crushed ice, like Mr. Rochester’s soul. Layer lime juice, Ginger beer, and Dark Rum. Sip rum. Cough from the fact that it tastes like pure gasoline. Grab straw or spoon, stir up. Finish drinking and bemoan your existence
